The loss of seven humanitarian workers from World Central Kitchen, among them an American, in Gaza yesterday fills me with deep sorrow and outrage. Their courageous act of providing food to starving civilians amidst conflict speaks volumes of their bravery and selflessness. Their untimely deaths are a profound tragedy.
Israel has committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the airstrikes that targeted the aid workers’ vehicles. This inquiry must be prompt, ensure accountability, and its outcomes should be transparent to the public
this is a complex situation with deeply held opinions on all sides. As of my last update in January 2022, Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by some countries, including the United States, Israel, and the European Union, among others. However, some perspectives view Hamas as a legitimate political entity representing the Palestinian people.
The United States remains committed to providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza by any means possible. I will persist in urging Israel to enhance the facilitation of this aid. Additionally, we are actively advocating for an immediate ceasefire as a component of ongoing negotiations. Currently, I have a team stationed in Cairo dedicated to advancing these efforts.
Earlier today, I reached out to my dear friend Chef José Andrés, the visionary behind World Central Kitchen, to offer my sincerest condolences for the loss of these valiant aid workers. I reiterated my unwavering support for him and his team’s tireless endeavors in providing sustenance to those in need worldwide.
May divine grace be upon the humanitarian workers who tragically lost their lives yesterday, and may their families and loved ones find solace amidst their sorrow.
